GUWAHATI, July 31 - Excise sleuths will now be armed with hi-tech breath analysers. The department has procured around 250 such advanced machines and distributed them among the district staff.
“These breath analysers are the most advanced machines available in the market. These rechargeable machines have an inbuilt camera and also a thermal printer. These machines are manufactured by one of the most reputed companies in this field - Alcopatrol of Hong Kong. The machine can give results within five seconds,” PRO to the Excise Minister Sailendra Pandey said.
He said such breath analysers had been a long-standing demand of the excise department’s enforcement wing.
“The amended excise law has a penalty of Rs 5,000 for drinking in public places. Our enforcement officers need to establish the crime when anyone is caught drinking while driving. These machines will be helpful for the purpose. Whenever required, we can also support the traffic and transport officials in enforcement drives to check rash driving, etc,” another official said.
