Oil exploration in Manipur opposed
IMPHAL, July 31 – Manipur-based Naga bodies have strongly objected to oil exploration activities in Tamenglong and Churachandpur and Jiribam subdivision of the State.

“The surreptitious activities of the Government of India and the Government of Manipur in extending a license to a multinational company for oil exploration in Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Jiribam subdivision without prior and informed consent of the people is highly objectionable,” said the United Naga Council in a statement here. “Innocent villagers, who have no technical knowledge of the far reaching impacts of oil drilling on the environment and habitation and the hazards of activity are being duped into signing agreements for seismic surveys by Alpha Geo Company,” it alleged.

A Noida-based company has reportedly been licensed to conduct oil exploration.

Union, Zeliangrong Boudi, Zeliangrong Youth Front, Zeliangrong Students' Union, Naga Women Union, Citizens Concern for Dams and Development, Action Committee Against Tipaimukh Project, North East Dialogue Forum, Committee on Land, Natural Environment and Resources and Sinlung Hmar Indigenous Peoples' Human Rights Organization have also demanded immediate revocation of the memorandum of understanding between the Centre and Alpha Geo Private Limited and Jubilant oil and Gas Private Limited in Manipur.
