Attack on scribes condemned
 BARPETA, April 26 - The Press fraternity in Barpeta has vehemently condemned the recent spurt of attack on journalists in several parts of the State and have demanded arrest of the culprits behind the incidents.

In a statement, Sunil Kumar Das and Mahananda Pathak, president and secretary respectively of Barpeta district committee of Journalist Union of Assam stated that the lethal attack on Rajen Deka, the local correspondent of a vernacular daily from Mukalmua in Barpeta district, Upasana Barua Goswami, representative of News 18 in Tinsukia and another attack in Dhubri are in no way acceptable. They condemned the attacks in the strongest words and demanded that the culprits involved in these incidents should be brought to book in no time.

The Barpeta Press Club also expressed similar views in its statement issued by Priyaranjan Das and Nabajit Das, president and secretary respectively of the press club.

Sarukshetri Mahkuma Sambadik Sanstha has termed the series of incidents as an attack on democracy and an attempt to intimidate the freedom of press. Kalgachia Mahkuma Sambadik Sanstha has also joined the condemnation. All the organisations have demanded the government to arrest the culprits immediately.

ANN Service adds from Patacharkuchi: The Patacharkuchi Press Club has strongly condemned the attacks on mukalmua correspondent of Dainik Asam, Rajen Deka last night by a group of miscreants. The press club demanded to book the culprits involved in the case at the earliest. Deka was reportedly attacked with sharp weapons and rods and injured critically. It is also learnt that some of the culprits have been identified by family members of Rajen Deka. The press club also demanded exemplary punishment to those involved

in the crime and ensure adequate security to the journalist.
