CORRESPONDENT
ITANAGAR, April 26 - A team of high-ranking Central officials, led by DoNER Secretary Dr Inder Jit Singh, today visited the Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) on the Rono Hills near Doimukh to take stock of the development activities being taken up at the university campus – particularly, the main university auditorium, which is being constructed with a grant from the DoNER Ministry.

Welcoming the visiting officials, RGU Vice Chancellor in-charge Prof Amitava Mitra gave a detailed presentation on the evolution and current status of the RGU and shared with the visiting team the various academic, research and outreach programmes that the Central varsity has been undertaking.

He said that the RGU, which has been ranked among the top 100 universities in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the HRD Ministry, has also prepared a long-term vision document for its expansion, with additional seven departments and four centres in the offing.

“While we have sought funds from the Higher Education Financing Agency for assisting university expansion works, we also need the cooperation and support of the DoNER Ministry and the NEC so that the RGU can deliver the goods,” he said. RGU Registrar Prof Tomo Riba also spoke during the interaction.

Later, the DoNER Secretary and his team of officials inspected the 1000-seat auditorium site and also interacted with students and faculty members. Reviewing the progress of the construction works, Dr Singh said that the DoNER Ministry was responsive to the needs of the university community and would extend whatever assistance was possible.

He stressed that every grant is linked to timely delivery, and that it is necessary to ensure quality construction so that students can avail of the benefits of the infrastructure that the Central and State governments provide.

The DoNER Secretary was accompanied by Joint Secretaries JK Sinha and Saurabh Endly, Director Umesh Kumar and NEC adviser Navin Kumar. A team of officials of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh comprising Secretary of Planning NT Glow, Director of Planning P Mishra and Deputy Director of Planning Tage Haider also accompanied the Central officials during the visit.
