Mizo Govt urged to oppose Citizen Amendment bill
AIZAWL, April 25 - Aizawl-based anti corruption watchdog People’s Right to Information and Development Society of Mizoram (PRISM) on Monday urged the Mizoram Government and the opposition parties in the State to strongly oppose the proposed Indian Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
PRISM president Vanlalruata said that the Bill, as introduced in Parliament by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, if passed, would be “dangerous” for small States like Mizoram and could “tilt the demographic balance”.
“The proposed amendment provides that Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis and Buddhists, who entered India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and who stayed in the country for six years could become citizens of India,” Vanlalruata said.He alleged that the amendment Bill, if passed would enable illegal migrants from Bangladesh living in Mizoram and other Northeastern States to become citizens. – PTI
