IMPHAL, April 25 – Manipur leg of “Breaking the Silence 2015” campaign was launched in greater Imphal area recently to build awareness among girls and women about using sanitary pads during their menstruation period.

Campaign host Urmila Chanam told mediapersons at Manipur Press club here that only 12 per cent of the girls and womean in India use sanitary pads. The reason for not using sanitary pads are myths and traditional taboos, extra expenditure on sanitary pads and also lack of knowledge about the advantage of using sanitary pads.

On the other hand, the remaining 88 per cent of the girls and women were using unhygienic sanitary pads such as very old cloth rags, polythene, tissue paper, newspaper, hay, sand and even ashes. She informed that women can get free sanitary pads from the health care centres under the Union Ministry of Water and Sanitation scheme. The use of unhygienic sanitary pads may cause diseases such as cervical cancer, RTI, UTI and even infertility. Chanam added that around 72,000 women die from cervical cancer every year in India.
