Tej demands Bhupenda’s memorial soon
staff reporter
GUWAHATI, April 23 – Tej Hazarika, son of legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika, has demanded that the memorial of his legendary father should be constructed as soon as possible.

In a statement, Tej Hazarika said, “since November 9, 2011, when I entered the Assamese consciousness upon cremating my father, I became connected to the Xamadhi Khetra. All Over Assam, on their own, people are doing many things to remember and honour Dr Bhupen Hazarika. Though devoted volunteers are preventing gathering of debris at the cremation ground, little else has been done as the smoking trucks roar by on the highway nearby.” He expressed the hope that those who pledged to construct a memorial would do so at the earliest to give Dr Hazarika the appropriate honour that he deserves.

In the statement, Tej Hazarika remembered his experiences during the Rongali Bihu celebrations in the State and the human solidarity during the celebrations made him understand why his late father loved Assam so much.

He said that during his recent visit to Assam, he could meet cross sections of the society both in Guwahati and upper Assam and learnt about the fondness and respect that the people have for Dr Hazarika. He hoped that Assam would see better days ahead.

Tej Hazarika further said that receiving of the Padma Vibhushan award from the President of India and the Friends of Liberation War award from the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on behalf of his late father marked his acceptance in the sub continental society. The icons of the awards were handed over to the Kalakshetra so that those can be seen by all sections of people, he added.
