GUWAHATI, April 15 – Boxer Shiva Thapa, who has booked a berth in the London Olympics, arrived in the city today and was accored a warm welcome at the LGBI Airport and later was felicitated by various organisations at the Assam Olympic Association conference hall.
The youngest India boxer to qualify for the Olympics, Shiva was here in the city to visit his family members at Rehabari. He will fly back to Patiala tomorrow for training.
Officials of State organisations like AOA, boxing, judo, kabaddi, canoeing, kho-kho, archery, ESPA, City Cricket Coaching Centre, Nepali Students, lawn bowling along with Directorate of Sports, SAI, Ulubari Boxing Club, GSA, Nepali Sanskriti Suraksha Samiti, etc., were present in the ceremony. Local MLA Capt Robin Bordoloi, who was present in the felicitation function, said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has promised to provide Rs 10 lakh to Shiva. Bordoloi himself will give Rs 50,000 to the young boxer. Accordingly, Dispur Barowari Bihu Sammilan and Ulubari Bihu Committee have announced to present Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively to Shiva.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited, which has been sponsoring Shiva, has already announced Rs 3 lakh for him.
State boxing body president Kali Kanta Boro, SAI city centre director in-charge Subhash Basumatary were also present on the occasion along with a large number of sports lovers and mediapersons in the felicitation function. AASU and All Guwahati Students Union also congratulated Shiva for achieving the Olympic berth after receiveing him at LGBI Airport this morning.
ASJA felicitation: Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA), felicitating Shiva, presented him Rs 10,000 and a packet containing tracksuit, T shirt, kit bag, etc. ASJA president Subodh Malla Baruah handed over the gifts to Shiva. The proud family members of Shiva, father Padam Thapa, mother Goma Devi, boxer brother Gobin Thapa and four sisters were also present on the occasion.
