GOALPARA, April 13 - Continuing with the Systematic Voter Education and Voter Participation (SVEEP) activities, the District Election Officer (DEO), also the Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara district, Varnali Deka said that a slew of activities have been going on in accordance with the directions of Election Commission of India (ECI) for sensitising the voters to cast their votes in a non-partisan manner.
Stating details, Deka while talking to this correspondent informed that already 746 ‘chunav pathsalas’ have been held and the district helpline which is the administration's new initiative is operational 7 days a week (03663-1950). The static EVM/VVPAT centre has been established at the DC office campus where a total of 8252 mock votes have been polled. Also 16 mobile vans have been deployed for covering the entire district while awareness programmes have been conducted for service voters(Assam police and army personnel) about their rights besides holding a total of three press meets.
Deka further said that many awareness programmes focusing on women were organised and a total of 95 ASHA supervisors have been trained who will again train 1085 workers while seven ICDS offices were visited by officers in the district for enhancing the awareness of around 2,500 anganwadi workers and 2500 anganwadi helpers. Dealing with Persons with disabilities(PWDs), the DEO informed that a total of 1741 PWDs were mapped and provided with awareness materials and as for setting up voters awareness forums and clubs for young and new prospective voters, 25 Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs)have been constituted in the district.
Deka has also taken many initiatives through many miscellaneous activities to ensure widespread publicity for ensuring free and fair elections. Some of the prominent ones includes slogan writing competition, appeal letter from the DEO to all voters for exercising their voting rights, printed letters from DEO to 100 prominent citizens of the district for casting their votes. Also, plans have been made for organising awareness campaigns in 10% polling stations where the voting turnout is lowest and two tea gardens were visited for EVM/VVPAT and voting awareness campaigns.
