Village forbids women to lift PDS items
Correspondent
SHILLONG, April 13 – A women’s organisation has filed a written complaint to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner against a village council for disallowing women to lift items under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

The Kynroh Nonglyer village dorbar at Sohiong in East Khasi Hills district has denied the right of womenfolk in the village to lift PDS items. The Civil Society of Women Organisation (CSWO), an organisation fighting for women’s right, has filed a complaint with the DC, Sanjay Goyal here regarding the violation of the women’s right. The organisation has also filed a complaint with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

In its letter, the CSWO has sought the district administration and the KHADC’s intervention in the matter and strict action against those who have denied the womenfolk of the village their right.

CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing said that the PDS is a Centrally sponsored scheme and does not bar women to lift essential commodities for themselves and their families.

It was also highlighted in the letter that the council headed by the village chief, Kwit Kyrsian and his deputy Faithstar Nongtri recently did not allow women to sit for a meeting convened to discuss matters concerning the village.
