GUWAHATI, April 13 – The search for a male lead to portray the role of the legendary Bhupen Hazarika on the silver screen is over. Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee would play Bhupen Hazarika in the biopic of the musical maestro to be directed by Dr Hazarika’s long-time companion Kalpana Lajmi.
Talking to this correspondent over the phone, Lajmi today said that Prosenjit Chatterjee, popular as ‘Bumba-da’ among his fans, would be the male lead in the biopic Dhumuha – the storm, the love story of Bhupen Hazarika and Kalpana Lajmi, and the tales of the tempestuous life of the iconic Dr Hazarika and his passion for music.
She, however, said that the search for an actor to play her character is still on.
Prosenjit, a leading star of Bengali cinema for the past three decades, has many successful and critically acclaimed films to his credit, including Chokher Bali, Amar Sangi, Apon Amaar Apon and Ami, Yasin Ar Amar Madhubala. In 2007, he received the National Award Silver Lotus as the best actor for his performance in Dosar.
While announcing the project to make a tri-lingual biopic on Bhupenda one year back, Lajmi had Mahesh Bhatt and Puja Bhatt on board. “The Bhatt camp is not producing the film now. We would have to search for new producers,” she said.
“The process of writing the screenplay is on and hopefully we would start working on it after the monsoons,” said Lajmi.
The film is supposed to be made in English, Assamese and Bengali languages.
“Making a biopic is a slow process. It is not easy to recreate the life of an iconic personality like him. It is not a typical commercial movie and can’t be made in haste,” she added.
