Two big cats die within 48 hours
Correspondent
DERGAON, April 9 – Another leopard was killed at Khakandaguri under Dergaon Police Station and Dergaon Forest Beat Office around 1 pm today.

According to information, one Umbha Pau of Khakandaguri found a leopard suddenly in front of him while he was returning home. Panicked, he stuck the leopard with a hammer, killing the big cat instantly.

After the incident, forest personnel reached the spot and recovered the body of the female leopard. Later, it was cremated in the office of the Dergaon Forest Beat Office in presence of Ranger PD Nath.

It is pertinent to mention that another female leopard was brutally killed and its flesh was taken away at Bahikhua Chapori under Dergaon PS on April 7.

With two leopards being killed within 48 hours, a sensation prevails among Nature lovers of the area.

When contacted, Ranger PD Nath told this correspondent that big cats are being killed largely due to the lack of awareness. However, when the first leopard was killed, there was no provocation for the brutal act. But today’s incident occurred completely due to self-defence. The Ranger also opined that such incidents are also increasing due to lack of necessary equipment like mobile van, rescue team, sufficient staff, etc. He ruled out any negligence on the part of the staff of the Dergaon Forest Beat Office and called for better coordination between police and forest personnel. He also advocated greater awareness and patrolling in the area.

Talking to this correspondent, the Dergaon Forest Beat Officer Sailen Baruah said that the villagers cannot be expected to rescue big cats. However, Nature lovers, too, cannot take the matter easily as two big cats have died in a matter of just 48 hours.
