Ex-Manipur Dy Speaker’s house attacked

 IMPHAL, April 9 – Unidentified armed men suspected to be undergrounds attacked the residence of former Manipur Deputy Speaker TT Haokip by exploding a grenade here today.

In the attack his daughter sustained injury when the grenade was exploded at their New Lambulane residence in Imphal East district around 6.20 am today.

Police said the daughter Thingkhonoi Haokip,18 has been discharged from the hospital after she was given treatment.

Police suspected hands of a hill based militant organisation in the attack. The former Deputy Speaker, who runs Haokip Travels could not be contacted for his comment.

In a separate incident, soldiers of 28 Assam Rifles claimed to have gunned down a suspected underground cadre in a wee hour operation in Thoubal district.

The incident took place at Waithou Chiru area today. “While own troops were approaching a selected ambush site, they were fired upon by armed underground cadres”, PRO Assam Rifles said in a release. “The troops immediately retaliated resulting in the elimination of one insurgent.”

The body and recovered items such as one 9mm Pistol with magazine, one live round, etc., have been handed over to Lilong Police Station, it said.
