STAFF Reporter
GUWAHATI, April 8 – Taking suo moto cognizance of various media reports including the electronic media (during March 30-April 1) about police lathicharge, bursting of tear-gas shells, and firing on protesters at Sualkuchi who were opposing the clandestine sale of imported silk in the name of the State’s famed indigenous silk, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed the Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, to institute an inquiry into the incident and submit a report within 30 days.

The inquiry should be carried out by an official not below the rank of Additional Chief Secretary, the order said.

Terming the police action as most brutal which resulted in injury to nine persons, AHRC Chairperson Justice Dr Aftab H Saikia, in his order, further asked the Chief Secretary to inquire why the Government did not take any remedial measures to ease the situation.
