Police rescue woman from mob’s clutches

 MORIGAON, April 4 - A woman namely, Sukleswari Bangthai (50) was brutally tortured by some villagers on the suspicion of being a witch at around 11:30 am today at Garmari village under Morigaon Police Station.

According to Jayanta Bora, Executive Magistrate, Morigaon, the superstitious people assembled in the house of Sukleswari with an aim to kill her, suspecting her to be a witch. Receiving the information, police and security forces rushed to the spot. The mob attacked the police party by pelting stones on it. To rescue the woman, initially police resorted to lathicharge and fired teargas shells and when the situation worsened further, they had to open fire to disperse the unruly mob. The OC, Morigaon Police Station, Prakash Hazarika was injured in the mob attack. He was admitted to Morigaon Civil Hospital. The rescued woman was also admitted to Morigaon Civil Hospital.
