Dr Manish Bhuyan dead
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Nov 25 – Distinguished cardiologist and academic Dr Manish Chandra Bhuyan breathed his last this morning at a nursing home in Guwahati following a cardiac arrest. The doctor who established the cardiology department of Gauhati Medical College, and motivated a number of young doctors to pursue his subject was eighty-four.

Dr Bhuyan was born in Nagaon to Dr Jyotish Chandra Bhuyan and Hiranyalata Bhuyan, a social worker. After his schooling in Nagaon he had his college education in Kolkata. Completing his medical studies from RG Kar Medical College, he proceeded to the US for specialisation. He did a course in cardiology from the University of Pennsylvania, according to family sources.

Unlike many other peers of his who choose to settle abroad, Dr Bhuyan returned to Assam and joined as an Assistant Professor in Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. Later he was transferred to Gauhati Medical College Hospital where he served with distinction. It was his untiring efforts which led to the establishment of the Department of Cardiology. Dr Bhuyan retired as the head of Cardiology, GMCH in 1986, but continued offering his services to the needy.

Acknowledging his pioneering contribution to the medical profession in Assam, doctors who trained under him refer to his qualities as a doctor and as an individual. Recalling his legacy, Dr Dhiman Choudhury of the GMCH said that the late Dr Bhuyan was a rare combination of remarkable intellect and integrity. “He was good in identifying talents and in encouraging them to perform well. In a number of cases he motivated young doctors to take up cardiology recognising their need in the region,” Dr Choudhury noted.

Apart from his professional life he was active in a number of social causes. He was the president of the Indian Society for Cultural Co-operation and Friendship, which today paid homage to the late physician. He was also a trustee of the DR B Borooah Cancer Institute and the Bishnu Nirmala Trust. Moreover, he was a member of Rotary Club of Guwahati for a long time.

The students, teachers and staff of Gauhati Medical College have sent their condolences to the bereaved family. Senior doctors of the college were among those who visited his residence on GNB Road to pay their last respects today. The Cardiological Society of Assam, and the Communist party of India have also issued statements mourning the loss the senior physician.

Dr Bhuyan leaves behind a daughter, a son and a host of relatives. His last rites were performed in the Navagraha cremation ground in the afternoon.
