Police may move CBI for information STAFF Reporter GUWAHATI, Nov 5 – Assam Police is likely to move the CBI’s Interpol wing to officially confirm the reported arrest of the banned ULFA’s ‘foreign secretary’ Sasha Choudhury and ‘finance secretary’ Chitraban Hazarika in Bangladesh. “We do not have any official confirmation from Bangladesh on the developments but we, if required, are going to seek an official confirmation by moving the CBI’s Interpol wing to verify the news published in the media,” Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, Sankar Baruah told The Assam Tribune.
Baruah said that the absence of any extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh also made it impractical on the part of India to seek deportation of the arrested duo in India in the event of any actual arrest.
Meanwhile, sources in the Assam Police’s Special Branch said that as per their information, five to six armed lungi-clad persons had taken into their custody two persons in Bangladesh.
However, they refused to comment on the house arrest of family members of ULFA leaders in Bangladesh.
Our Nalbari Correspondent adds: The arrest of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA)’s Finance secretary Sasha Chaudhury is yet to be confirmed by his family members at Helasa in Nalbari district. However, the report of his arrest today created sensation in the district.
Talking to this correspondent, Sasha’s elder brother Prasenjit Chaudhuri said: “we have not been informed about his arrest as reported in the media.” According to him, nobody from Bangladesh and from the Indian Government so far informed about the arrest. Even the old parents of the ULFA leader are unaware regarding the media report, Chaudhuri added.
It may be mentioned here that Sasha Chaudhury, who joined the outfit in 1983, has remained away from the family member since 1984. In 2000, his brother Dipak Chaudhuri was killed by secret killers at his residence.
Staff Reporter adds: Meanwhile, family members of ULFA leaders Sasha Choudhury and Chitrabon Hazarika approached Gauhati High Court advocate Bijon Mahajan with requests to provide legal assistance in case both Choudhury and Hazarika are extradited to India.
Chakra Hazarika, a caution by Chitrabon and Prasenjit Chaudhury, younger brother of Sasha, who met Mahajan separately are also known to have asked the advocate to arrange for legal assistance through some human rights groups in case the ULFA leaders are detained in Bangladesh.
