Semi-intensive goat farming projects opened in Darrang dist
 GUWAHATI, Nov 1 – For economic sustenance and to encourage goat farming in a scientific manner in rural areas, the first two ‘semi-intensive goat farming’ projects to be maintained by Saraswati Diamond SHG and Sanchita Diamond SHG under Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana (RKVY) in Darrang district were formally inaugurated by the SDO (Sadar), Darrang Gitanjali Dutta at Dakshin Chuburi and Satgharia village under Sipajhar Revenue Circle at a simple function on October 28 in presence of the BDO, Sipajhar, Pankaj Chakravarty, DIPRO, Darrang Pranjit Hazarika and District V&AHO, Dr Indra Kanta Nath. This was stated in an official press release issued at Mangaldoi.

Under RKVY, 10 SHGs have been selected from different parts of the district under which 44 indigenous goats with 110 male-female ratio per SHGs would be provided. Under this project, the SHGs bear 50 percent of the cost in form of constructing the goat sheds, fodder cultivation equipment and application, etc., and four goats and rest 50 percent is borne by the department for purchase of female goats and technical supervision. For each project, Rs 1 lakh has been earmarked of which 50 percent is the share of the beneficiary share.

It is worth mentioning that goat farming is a profitable business in the localities since the maintenance cost is less there is abundance of green grass and fooder thus resulting in boosting the income avenue of the farm.

During the inauguration programmes a lively interaction session was held between the officials and the SHGs members on methods of making the project commercially viable and profitable. The SHG members were made aware on the different welfare schemes implemented through the BDO office in rural areas for economic self dependence.

Apart from Saraswati and Sanchita SHGs, Pabitara SHG, Saptarishi SHG, Nayan Diamond SHG, Juri Diamond SHG, Priyasakhi, SHG, Sira Seuji SHG, Shokna Nabajyoti SHG and Rupali SHG have been selected for the project.
