Nagaon farmers take to streets over demands

 NAGAON, June 25 – About 10,000 farmers from different parts of the district marched through the main streets of Nagaon town with banners festoons, etc. Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity organised this rally. They came to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Nagaon, crossing the police barricades set up in several places leading to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

They submitted a memorandum to Dr J Balaji, Deputy Commissioner, Nagaon, addressed to the Chief Minister. Their demands include provide cent per cent irrigation, work under NREGA and hike in daily wages under the scheme, provision of free seeds and free ration for six months for the drought-affected people of the district, streamlining of the public distribution system, necessary assistance to the flood and erosion-affected people and provision of land pattas to the peasants.

The memorandum was signed by Mulan Laskar and Akhil Gogoi, president and secretary of the State committee. President Raju Bora and secretary Baneswar Bodo signed on behalf of the district unit of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity.

Demo: Like in other parts of the State, the Government employees as well as employees of colleges and schools of Nagaon, staged a sit-in demonstration recently to put pressure on the State Government for the early publication of the Pay Commission report. Local leaders addressed the agitating employees in front of the office premises of DC, Nagaon.

Remembered: Under the auspices of Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha and Nagaon Sahitya Sabha, the commemoration day of Anandaram Dhekial Phukan was observed recently at ADP College premises.

Addressing the main function, Dr Manik Kar, Head of the Department of Geography, Nowgong College, highlighted the contributions of Dhekial Phukan to solve the flood problems as well as steps taken to develop Nagaon by constructing bridges, roads, etc.

Phanindra Nath Gayan, vice president of the Zilla Sahitya Sabha, was in the chair. Poet Idrish Ali offered a gamocha to the main speaker, Dr Kar on behalf of the Sahitya Sabha. Dr Rajen Saikia also spoke a few words about Dhekial Phukan.

Earlier, secretary of the Zilla Sahitya Sabha explained the significance of the function.
