Brazilian coach arrives for GTC soccer academy
Sports reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 21 – Juliano Silveira Fontana, a professional Brazilian football coach, who has been appointed as the chief coach, arrived here yesterday to coach youngsters in the Gauhati Town Club (GTC) Football Academy which will open on February 1 at the Judges’ Field here.

GTC general secretary Devojit Saikia while introducing the chief Brazialian coach and adviser of the Academy Edmar De Barros, who is also a Brazilian and runs a coaching centre in Kolkata, to the media, said the club will pick up 18 players for the residential academy and seven local players for training on January 23 and 24 by holding a selection camp. The GTC has decided to pick up players in the age group of 9 to 14 years and they will be given academic education apart from football training.

Saikia revealed that they have received 95 applications from all over the State and seven from Manipur.

The GTC secretary has also invited youngsters of that age group for the trials who have not applied as yet. The Brazilians will be assisted by State players Sawan Thapa and Nakul Boro, who will look after the goal keeping side.

The entire selection process would be looked after by the coaches and after selecting the players, the club authority will talk with the guardians of the players to discuss about their education.

Talking to the mediapersons, 31-year old Fontana said he will try to teach football – the Brazilian way – after making the selection. On the facilities available in the academy he said initially he has a plan for one year and during the year he will try to improve the footballing skills of the campers.

Although he can hardly speak English, he believes language should not be a hurdle to teach football as he could demonstrate all the skills in an easy way. He has experience of coaching in Port Alegre, Brazil and passed a couple of years in USA. He also trained several junior teams in Brazil.
