Rakhal Das Gupta remembered the years he spent with late Golap Borbora. Das Gupta mentioned that late Borbora held the post of president of NF Railway Mazdoor Union for a long time. He was a pro-labour leader. For the cause of general workers several times he went to jail. During the historic Railway Strike in 1974 he was imprisoned for joining the strike. Even when he was the Chief Minister of Assam he maintained good relations and co-operation with NF Railway Mazdoor Union.
The working committee meeting was attended by all the members of 46 branches of the union spread over all the corners of NF Railway which registered its strong protest against downsizing of staff strength on thumb rule and also for arbitrary surplus and surrender of staff and posts.
The meeting was addressed by Rakhal Das Gupta, general secretary, KC Roy Karmakar, Ashis Biswas AND Samir Chakraborty, joint general secretaries, Pijush Chakraborty, Asstt general secretary, Durga Dutta, central organising secretary and many others with MR Sarkar in the chair.
Rakhal Das Gupta, general secretary of the union stated that government decision to reduce the staff strength on thumb rule is anti-working class and anti N.E. Region. Railway is the only common source of the huge unemployed youth of the NE Region to get job. But massive surrender and surplus is depriving the youths of the NE Region. Rakhal Das Gupta also raised his voice for removal of anomalies in pay scales arising out of VI CPC.
The meeting discussed various problems of the railway workers and demanded strongly for filling up of all vacant posts, to ensure proper safety of staff, to allot quarters according to the entitlement of staff, etc.
