Tea exports up 3 per cent
NEW DELHI, Jan 7 (PTI): Tea exports from India, the second largest producer in the world, rose 3 per cent in November, while overseas sales increased by 9 per cent in the first 11 months of 2008, riding on lower output in the largest tea exporting country Kenya, and high prices.

According to the Tea Board, exports inched up to 19.05 million kg in November, compared with 18.46 million kg in the year-ago period, while shipments during January-November rose to 175.51 million kg, against 160.37 million kg in the same period last year.

India’s tea exports continued to benefit out of the shortfall in Kenya, which had earlier announced a 16 per cent decline in production in the first eight months of 2008.

High prices in the global markets for Indian tea coupled with the resolution of trade-related problems with Iraq, a major importer, also contributed to the rise in the exports, an industry expert said.
