‘Ensure people’s safety in Subansiri project area’
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 5 – The All Dhemaji District Students’ Union (ADDSU) and the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) have urged the committee set up by the State Assembly on the Subansiri mega dam issue to take appropriate decisions for ensuring safety of the people living in the downstream areas of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP). In a joint statement, the two organisations said that they have been agitating on the demand for keeping the construction of the main dam of the LSHEP in abeyance until the expert committee studying the downstream impact of the project submits its final report.

The expert committee was formed as per the decision of a tripartite meeting held on December 8, 2006 by the Assam Government with the representatives of the Government, All Assam Students’ Union and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

It was also decided at the meeting that until the completion of the study by the expert committee, construction of the main dam of the project would be kept in abeyance.

Comprising experts from the IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University, the committee in its interim report also suggested that construction of the main dam of the LSHEP should not be started until the final report of the study is submitted. The interim report of the committee was submitted on February 10, 2009.
