Reviving Flying Club
Sir, – It refers to the news item “Plan to revive Assam Flying Club” (AT, December 14). It will indeed be laudable if the Assam Flying Club again comes back to life producing commercial pilot licence holders. But much water has indeed flown down and all efforts made earlier came to naught. Every time the revival package was announced with much hullabaloo, but ended in a whimper. It is heartening to note that AFC, if we go by what had been trumpeted, is trying to tie up parties from abroad. Since AFC is pride of Assam and much of sentiment is involved it will be desirable that the government gives due weightage to local deserving parties having expertise on the line. It is in the air that if private parties outside the State are roped in State’s interest will suffer. In these days of acute scarcity of qualified pilots, AFC can play a pivotal role in the aviation sector of the country in general and the North East in particular. But as I said, the effort to revive AFC made earlier also, for reasons beyond comprehension, suffered a set back. Let’s hope this time it takes off bringing smile to those who would like to opt for a pilot’s career. – Yours etc., Bimal Kumar Hazarika, Alokpath, Khanapara, Guwahati.
