Dr Bezbaruah cremated

 JORHAT, Aug 2 – The mortal remains of eminent tea planter, well-known physician and philanthropist Dr Neel Kamal Bezbaruah were consigned to flames today at Boloma Tea Estate here. He died on Saturday in Kolkata due to old-age ailments.

Dr Bezbaruah, son of Chandra Kamal Bezbaruah, was one of the pioneers to shape the world of journalism, education and tea industry in Assam.

Abhijit Sharma, president of ATPA, heads of several educational institutions patronized by Dr Bezbaruah and officials of several tea estates were present during his cremation. He was 92.

Earlier, his body was taken to his birthplace Boloma in a procession today. It was also taken to CKB Commerce College, Jorhat, CKB College Teok, CKB High School, Boloma and Bokahola Tea Estae, Titabar this morning as a mark of honour for his contributions to these institutions.

Dr Bezbaruah was born on March 10, 1917 at Boloma Tea Estate. He has left behind his wife Sarada Bezbaruah who was the former principal of Jorhat College. He is also survived by his two sons Pravat Kamal Bezbaruah and Kishur Kamal Bezbaruah and their families.

Dr Bezbaruah had gone to England for higher education and earned fame as a physician during the Second World War. He later switched to the family profession of tea plantation and owned five tea estates. He was the founder member of Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. He was also the founder director of Assam Tea Corporation.

He was the owner and publisher of a daily newspaper Natun Asamiya , a monthly magazine Ramdhenu and a fortnightly women’s magazine Uruli.

Dr Bezbaruah made remarkable contribution towards the spread of higher education in the region. He donated two colleges, Chandra Kamal Bezbaruah Commerce College, Jorhat and Chandra Kamal Bezbaruah College, Teok and a school, Boloma Chandra Kamal Bezbaruah High School. He also started the New Jorhat College at his residence which later merged with the Jorhat College.

Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi sent a condolence message to the bereaved family of Dr Bezbaruah. Yesterday his death was condoled at CKB College, Teok and CKB Commerce College, Jorhat.
