Govt denies bid to gag Adivasi woman
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, April 1 – Reacting sharply to the reported statement of Lakshmi Orang, an Adivasi woman who was molested during mob violence in Guwahati on November 24, 2007, that the State Government was trying to gag her by offering Rs 1 lakh and a job, the State Government today said that it had announced the grant and the job on humanitarian grounds after the incident and that announcement still held good. “Moreover, the persons responsible for the assault on Lakshmi had been arrested and cases filed against them. Besides, the Justice Manisana Commission has submitted its report on the incident, which would be tabled in the ongoing Assembly. This will help in according punishment to all the people responsible for the violence on that day,” an official release said.

Lakshmi Orang had reportedly made the statement at a press conference at Jamshedpur in Bihar on Monday, accusing the Assam Government of trying to gag her with money and job.
