Goodwill gesture
In a gesture of belongingness and goodwill towards the cancer patients housed in Assam Bhawan, Navi Mumbai, for treatment in cancer care centres in the western metropolis, a week-long solidarity programme billed ‘Joy of Giving’ was organized at the Bhawan by the Kharghar Kingkhap Ladies Association. During the period, both lunch and dinner were served to the patients and their attendants as per choice.
The brief inauguration of the event, held amidst enthusiasm among all, began with Assam Bhawan resident commissioner Debashish Sarma lighting the ceremonial lamp. Others present during the programme included Dr Tapan Saikia of Tata Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, Jorhat District Lions Club Governor Dr Animesh Barua and secretary of Assam Association, Mumbai Dwipen Rajkonwar. They profusely praised the Kharghar ladies for their thought and action to the care of the cancer patients and their wards.
Association secretary Ruma Hazarika thanked all for their cooperation, including the Mumbai-based Assamese and local business houses who chipped in with their contributions for the good cause. She said this humble effort from the ladies association was basically to create fellow feeling and a sense of belongingness — a home away from their hearth and home in Assam — at a relatively alien land amidst new people.
Let’s hope the event becomes a regular affair and that other similar organizations also do their precious bits on the lines of the Kingkhap ladies and bring some solace to the lives of the cancer patients. Business bees
