prelude
In 753 AD, the Rashtrakutas established themselves in the Deccan as successors of the Chalukyas. The Kailash temple at Ellora was built during their reign and, representing the boldest attempt in the field of rock cut architecture, reproduces all the details of a structural temple in the intricacies of rock excavation. Perhaps, in the second half of the eight century, an island near the west coast was built in the Elephanta cave. It is one of the most magnificent art creations of India. The three faces of Shiva in the rock cuts of Elephanta represent Shiva as the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer. The above description is just a little bit of historical background, but there are a lot more history and myths associated with the rock cuts of this cave.
