New Art Players’ drama
 A satirical play Sei Gosjopa (That Tree), is going to be presented on March 5 and 6 at Rabindra Bhawan, Guwahati under the direction of upcoming director Anupjyoti Chowdhury. Presented by New Arts Players, the play is written by Kamal (Rana) Sarma, based on a popular Hindi story by Kishen Chandar. The play depicts artificial lives with materialistic views of today’s bureaucrats, ministers and even some intellectuals, who pose as leaders of the society. The artistes are Nipon Goswami, Lakshmi Borthakur, Dr Hemanta Barman, Iske Alam, Dr Munin Das, Uzzal Bhuyan, Gitanjali Das, Jolly Laskar and others. Anupjyoti earlier creditably directed two plays – Piyoli Phukan and Tongighar, and earned acclaim.
 
Adda honours Dr Hazarika
 Adda, a pioneering Dr Bhupen Hazaarika being felicitated by Adda members at his Nizarapar, Guwahati residence recentlyorganisation of short filmmakers of the North East, felicitated Dr Bhupen Hazarika recently at his residence in a novel way. They presented Dr Hazarika with a two-feet wooden sculpture, a citation and a gamocha. The citation reads, “We feel proud that we are living in a period when a legendery figure is guiding and inspiring us – the new generation...” The sculpture, made by a senior member Anup Hazarika, is based on Dr Hazarika’s immortal song Sagar Sangamat. Amarjyoti Deka led the team that also included chief patron Balindrajit Pathak, Amardeep Gogoi, Simanta Sandilya, Rajiv Barthakur, Suruj Duarah and Rupam Chetia, among others.
 
Samannayar Setu
 After the success of Sonali Sapon, Sanchita TalukdarANKK Production of Dibrugarh has come out with the serial Samannayar Setu that has already completed 26 episodes with overwhelming viewer response. Now, after getting an extension thanks to its popularity, the serial, otherwise being telecast at 6:30 pm every Saturday, will be presented at a new time slot – 6:30 pm every Sunday – from its 27th episode onwards.

Produced by Usha Talukdar and directed by Sanchita Talukdar, the serial tries to explore the hidden realities of human beings. Sanchita also plays the central character in the serial that has Usha Talukdar, Abhispa Bora, Dr Suranjit Lahon, Irin Lahon, Parangita Bora, Dhrubajyoti Das, Debojit Bora and others in its cast.
 
Rudra Barua remembered
 The Luit Konwar Rudra Barua Memorial Award for the year 2008 was awarded at a function under the aegis of State Music College on February 19 at Rabindra Bhawan, Guwahati. In the function attended by Ananda Mohan Bhagawati as appointed speaker, Swapnanil Barua as the chief guest, Sankar Prasad Kakati Bora as the guest of honour and Arati Barua as special invitee, the speakers recalled their association with Late Barua and dwelt at length on his manifold contributions to Assamese music and culture. Khagen Mahanta threw light on indigenous Assamese music. A variety of items were presented by the students of State Music College, which included songs penned and composed by the Luit Konwar and dances based on his songs. Earlier, Tapan Das, the acting Principal of the college felicitated the guests, and floral tributes were paid to the portrait of Late Barua. This year’s award was given to Momi Sarma, who had secured highest mark in Borgeet in B. Mus exam, under Gauhati University.
 
Stage play Meji
 A stage drama titled Meji, written by Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury, depicting the prevailing turmoil in Assam, is being staged at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir, Guwahati on March 6 and 7, to be continued every Saturday and Sunday for three months. Produced by Ratan Lahkar and supported by Airtel, the drama is being Kulada Kumar Bhatta, while the music is by Torali Sarma. The artistes include Indra Bania, Upakul Bodoloi, Pranjana Dutta, Chinmoy Bhattacharyya, Jolly Bhattacharya among others.
 
Kanchan 2 by March 10
 The second part of the now popular VCD film Kanchan, will be released on March 10. With the film’s shooting complete, the post-production work is in progress now. At the onset of the New Year 2009, the first part of this video film was released and it received good response from the audience.

The story of the film, primarily a Bihu song and dance-oriented one, revolves around a happy-go-lucky village girl named Kanchan. The role has been essayed with élan by popular actress Syamantika. Produced by Sanjay Dhanraj under the banner of Geeta Films, the film has been directed by Manas Baruah, with playwright and filmmaker Munin Baruah writing the screenplay.

Prasenjit has played the lead role against Syamantika. The music for the second part has been scored by Baran Bikash, Palash Gogoi and Jayanta Sonowal. Zubeen Garg, Ranjit Gogoi, Simanta Sekhar, etc, have rendered their voices. Pabitra Baruah, Sankalpajit Hazarika, Geetawali Rajkumari, Rina Bora, Arun Hazarika and others have played different roles in the film.
