ARADHANA, the organisation that uses music as a medium to reach out to different sections of society, held an “Exchange Programme” at Shishu Sarothi in Guwahati, on August 8. As usual, in these exchange programmes of Aradhana, several of the best artistes of the State performed alongside students of the institution, to the enrichment of both categories of artistes.

The programme commenced with the Director of Shishu Sarothi, Mira Kagti giving a brief overview of the rights and requirements of the differently abled. She also mentioned the encouraging progress that the students of the institution have made, over the years, under the tutelage of trained and experienced teachers. The President of “Aradhana”, R Chakravarty, spoke briefly of the work that Aradhana has carried out so far.

Among the students of Shishu Sarothi who performed, both individually and in groups, were Silsila, Victor and Vishal. Their mastery of Sur and Taal have indeed improved tremendously over the years, to their own credit, and that of their teachers.

A highlight of the programme was the donation of a harmonium by the Pramod Goswami Trust to Silsila Das, a student of the institute, to facilitate her riyaz and further her musical development. Geeta Goswami presented the instrument on behalf of the Trust. The programme was ably compered by Illora Goswami in her inimitable manner.

The outside artistes who performed included Jiten Basumatari, whose sonorous Bhajans inspired the students to ask several questions about how they could better their own music. Tabla wizard Pawan Bordoloi sprang a pleasant surprise when he brought on stage his student, a girl, Triveni Bhattacharjee. Women tabla players being such a rarity even today, their jugalbandi, which showcased a high level of creative experimentation, was a double bonanza, much appreciated by the listeners. Dilip Das’ songs were melodiously rendered, while young Kasvi Sarma charmed with her creative dance. At the request of the students, the Vice President of Aradhana, noted singer Pulak Banerjee presented his ever popular Paar Hoi Gol Dhumuha Ejak…
